Start Your Van Life JourneyWhy Van Life?
Van life offers unparalleled freedom, adventure, and a minimalist lifestyle. Whether you're a weekend warrior or planning to live full-time on the road, proper preparation is key. This guide covers every aspect, from vehicle selection to daily routines, ensuring you make informed decisions and avoid common pitfalls.
1. Choosing the Right Van
Your van is your home, transportation, and adventure base. Consider these factors before buying:
Van Types
- Classic Cargo Van: Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Ram ProMaster – most popular for conversions.
- Minivan: Cheaper, more fuel-efficient, but less space.
- RV / Camper Van: Ready-to-go but often more expensive.
Key Considerations
- Size: Balance between maneuverability and living space.
- Fuel Economy: Vans average 15–20 MPG; diesel options offer better mileage.
- Maintenance: Diesel engines last longer but cost more to repair.
Popular Models
- Ford Transit (high roof, spacious)
- Mercedes Sprinter (reliable, 4x4 option)
- Ram ProMaster (front-wheel drive, low floor)
- Chevrolet Express (budget-friendly)
If you're new to van life, consider renting first to test different layouts. Many rental companies offer camper types that allow you to experience the lifestyle before committing.

3. Stealth Camping & Overnight Parking
Finding safe and legal places to sleep is one of the biggest challenges. Here are proven strategies:
-
Know the Rules
Research local ordinances: some cities ban overnight parking, while others allow it in designated areas. Apps like iOverlander and Campendium are invaluable.
-
Stealth Techniques
Choose non-descript vans, avoid drawing attention (no exterior lights), and keep noise levels low. Rotate parking spots to avoid detection. Learn more about stealth camping for detailed tactics.
-
Safe Locations
Walmart parking lots, Cracker Barrel, and 24-hour gyms are often van-friendly. Always ask permission if unsure. National forests and BLM land offer free dispersed camping – see our guide on BLM camping for more information.

5. Van Life Cost Breakdown (Average Monthly)
Understanding costs helps you budget and avoid surprises. Here's a realistic monthly estimate for a solo traveler in North America:
| Expense Category | Estimated Monthly Cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $300 – $600 |
| Food & Groceries | $400 – $600 |
| Insurance (auto & health) | $200 – $350 |
| Campgrounds / Parking fees | $150 – $400 |
| Van Maintenance & Repairs | $100 – $250 (average) |
| Phone & Internet | $80 – $150 |
| Entertainment & Extras | $100 – $200 |
| Total Monthly Average | $1,330 – $2,550 |
Many van lifers reduce costs by boondocking (free camping) on BLM land or in national forests. Cooking your own meals and minimizing eating out also slashes the budget.
6. Winter Van Life Tips
Cold weather adds complexity but is manageable with the right preparation:
-
Insulation
Properly insulate your van – use foam board, wool, or Thinsulate. Cover windows with insulated window covers.
-
Heating
Install a diesel heater or portable propane heater with proper ventilation. Always use a carbon monoxide detector.
-
Water Systems
Prevent pipes from freezing by using RV antifreeze or keeping water in insulated containers inside the van.
